Sharon Feldstein at SPF  Artist Spotlight: Sharon Feldstein at SPF Design Studio

Artist Medium: Pine wood with textured paper painted with oil-based inks

Greatest Source of Inspiration: Since I'm still relatively new in the art field, I'm always reading and learning about other artists and their techniques. It excites me when I see a painting or a mixed media work that I just love and know that I can use my own interpretation of it to create something that is uniquely mine. It could be a color combination, or the rendering of an abstract tree, or a new way to draw a face...but when I get that "aha" moment, I have to immediately run over to my drawing table and try out my new idea.

Perfect Day: When all the kids are in school, and there's absolutely nothing on my schedule for the day.  I head into my studio with a large cup of steaming coffee, and begin creating new works or filling orders. To make a perfect day even more perfect, would be to create a new favorite piece of artwork. This happens every couple of weeks, and sends me on a whole new artistic journey.

Proudest Accomplishment: My trademarked Storysquares® line. I have incorporated my love of woodworking, calligraphy and painting into a viable business. Being a self taught artist and graphic designer, I sometimes feel that what I do is not "serious art." But when someone comes up to me and says "YOU'RE Storysquares! I just bought one of your collages," or commissions me to create a family heirloom for a lifecycle event, I have to accept the fact that I AM making "serious art"  -- fun and colorful, and real, even if not very serious!

Can't Live Without: Sunshine and fresh air. And the feeling of being productive. On busy days with children and appointments, when I don't have time to take out a paintbrush or a wood-burner pen, I feel harried and stressed.  I need to feel accomplishment at the end of the day, either having filled a large order or begun working on a product that I've been thinking about for months.

What's next in my work: spf art
My medium is wood, and I've been using a power carver the past couple of years to create the lines and textures in my work. I am now  working on becoming  proficient at wood-burning, which allows for a more creative work flow. I'm working on larger pieces that have a lot of fun detail and I'm playing around with a new line of Storysquares, "idiom art," which is sarcastically humorous.

What our artists are excited about this season

Howard Schwarz:
"What excites me for this season is customers.  They are starting to come back to do shopping.  I believe price and quality of product is crucial for today's shopper.  They are very proud to buy Made in America as well.  Sometimes the simplest gift can mean so much."

"I am looking forward to 2010 with a positive attitude. I believe that artists and retailers alike have struggled through 2009. I am excited to start designing and painting for a new season. This year has taught me to be more in tune with the blessings in my life. I am grateful to be able to do my art and have a good response to it. Every day I thank the universe for the old tin roof over my head, my animals, and most of all my funny and loving family."
